Scientists Build Artificial Leg From Smartphone Parts

By Margaret Rock

Researchers at Vanderbilt University created a more agile prosthetic leg using smartphone innovations, the latest example of how mobile technology is propelling medical advances.
The Vanderbilt leg, weighing in less than most lower limbs at nine pounds, is unique in its ability to use computer, sensor, motor, and battery technology to better power knee and ankle joints in unison, allowing amputees to walk with a more natural gait. The prosthetic leg also senses ground slope and avoids obstructions to optimize balance.

The researchers' seven-year effort harnesses several technological advances made possible by smartphones, including microprocessors that use data to predict people's intended actions and prompts the device to respond. And, on one charge, the device can function at normal levels for about three days, requiring 30 to 40 percent less than an average person's energy to operate.more

Apple stock recovers from shock of Jobs resigning

NEW YORK (AP) — Investors in Apple on Thursday morning appeared to be getting over the worst of the shock of Steve Jobs resignation from the CEO post.

Apple shares were down $8.67, or 2.3 percent, at $367.51 in pre-market trading. That's half the loss seen in Thursday's extended trading, after Apple said Jobs would be ceding the CEO job to Tim Cook.
Analyst tried to soothe investors with a reminder that Jobs' departure was expected due to his health problems, even if the timing was not certain.

Peter Misek at Jefferies & Co. said it was a "very positive" sign that Jobs will assume the role of chairman. Misek had expected Jobs to depart completely from the company. As chairman, "Jobs will be able to continue to offer his insights and visions for the future of Apple."

Futures on the Nasdaq 100, which gets more than half its value from technology companies like Apple Inc., fell slightly before the opening bell. more

What!! Jobs quits his Job? As CEO of Apple

"Steve Jobs resigns as CEO of Apple"

He had a great run
In a letter he sent

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee more

DePaul University goes Mobile!

Strolling in from work I routinely check the mail as I always do once a week...lol. Low and behold I get a "mailer" from my Alumni association DePaul University, a private catholic school located in Chicago IL, in the diversely populated Lincoln Park area. I notice that the mailer talked about a fund: "The Moore Fund" requesting Alumni  donate and participate in what they call the Moore challenge. I scroll down to the bottom and what do I see? A QR code encouraging Alum to scan it, this scan will lead readers directly to the website straight from their handheld.

As a mobile media advocate I was impressed, even a private catholic institution such as DePaul recognizes the value in modernizing their messages and catering to the current audience. I thought hey that's progressive and their on the cutting edge of a "mobile media" shift that's fairly new... All in all I thought "DOPE" and wanted to share that with you guys.

More and more each day business, schools, restaurants, artist, marketers are using some form of mobile media too directly connect with their audience. It is a "cost effective" viral marketing strategy that has the propensity to generate a great deal of business and awareness. It really can't be ignored and for a business to remain relevant its obvious they have to get with the times and that's what DePaul did and I am proud of them!

AT&T Possibly Confirms October IPhone 5 Release

By Margaret Rock |

One of AT&T's vice presidents may have confirmed to several employees that the iPhone 5 is expected to launch in early October, the latest rumor to fix a date for the highly anticipated latest generation smartphone.

The unnamed AT&T vice president reportedly communicated to a group of managers about the iPhone 5 release, saying, "Expect things to get really, really busy in the next 35-50 days, so prepare your teams accordingly," according to BGR.The news gels with other reports, which point to Apple announcing the iPhone 5 in September with a release set for early October.

Release dates have been anticipated beginning as early as September, according to a June report in Bloomberg, predicting the date would be pushed back to coincide with the release of the iOS 5 this fall more

At&t scheduled to pay $39 billion for T-Mobile

TechCrunch  today leaked news of FCC filings that telecom conglomerate at&t will be acquiring t-mobile for $39 billion! Makes you tremble in your seat doesn't it? Even Warren Buffet sneezed when he heard that amount! The Question is why do it At&t? Many consumers may think its just because, to dominate but no, it is actually to remain relevant!

Get use to these 3 simple letters "LTE" , 4G LTE is the wave of the future there is even talk of Apple testing "LTE" on the release of Iphone 5.  Appolicious reports that At&t has plans to expand their network to rural areas and to accommodate the 4G LTE in the release of the latest mobile devices, buying t-mobile will add many streams of income and increase their profitability, therefore expanding their customer base and making way for the new technologies.

I for one am not completely "optimistic" about the merger and here is why: I live in a major metro area and at&t's coverage is the worst! Drop calls, late voicemails etc. etc. You would think with it's signature mobile device the Iphone its network would be superior but it is not! Next up is 'T-mobile" I would say they have a lot of issues as well! The 4G network they have converted over too is very immature and unstable. As far as networks are concerned both of these carriers have a lack of consistency to field. What is the point of a brand new shiny phone if you can't use it? Besides being a fashion statement- I kidd! It devalues the $500 you spent on your mobile device.

Well I am looking forward to seeing how this merger will unfold, how it will benefit the consumer and what other surprises this may bring.

Smartphones or Sex?

By Joe Arico

A national survey found that a third of Americans would rather give up sex than their smartphones, as mobile devices become even more rooted into people's lives.

The survey by Telenav found people are more likely to give up a variety of habits instead of their smartphones. More than 50 percent of people would rather give up caffeine, chocolate or exercise than part with their iPhones or Blackberrys for a week, while a hygienically questionable 22 percent would be willing to part with their toothbrushes more

Celebrity Guests to Include Tony Orlando, Yakov, SIX, Buck Trent, Jim Stafford, Lennon Sisters, Raeanne Presley, Jim Strafuss and Others

Nashville, TN – May 24, 2011 — “America’s Piano Showman,” GRAMMY Award-winning pianist Dino Kartsonakis will host a benefit event to raise funds for victims of the recent Missouri floods on Thursday, May 26, at 6:30 pm CST at the Branson Convention Center. The night will feature a silent auction, special celebrity guests, and performances by Dino

On April 25, Branson, Mo. suffered the most catastrophic natural disaster to date. Officials estimate that the flood affected approximately 300 families, leaving hundreds homeless and destitute. Among those families was Kartsonakis and his wife Cheryl, who lost a lifetime of musical awards, archives, grand pianos, furniture, clothing, photographs and family heirlooms in 13 feet of water more

People can even save such information as height and weight, in case police would ever need it to help search for them. The app offers a special tab as well so parents can instantly email authorities all the stored information with only a few clicks.
In addition, the free app offers tips for worried parents on what to do if their child goes missing more

Zynga Trying to Buy Angry Birds

By Sandy Fitzgerald | Fri Aug 12, 2011 1:22 pm

Zynga is rumored to be pursuing Rovio, maker of Angry Birds to create a powerhouse gaming company for both mobile and social networks.

Reports indicate Zynga, best known for its FarmVille game on Facebook, is in talks with Rovio. Zynga is in the market to add another gaming platform, after it last month lost a bidding war for PopCap games, which went to Electronic Arts.

There are benefits for both gaming giants if they form a partnership. Zynga's games attract about 148 million users on Facebook every day, but people mostly play the games online instead of downloading them more

Is it a slap in the face that Verizon workers are walking out on their Jobs, when so many people don't have one?

 By: Taleice J

Mobile Media Now dares to ask the question: Are Verizon workers seriously walking out on their job when so many people don't have a job right now? If you don't know Verizon has the #1 network in the United States, some remark that their plans are costly and their customer service isn't the greatest but one thing is for certain their network is superior! Verizon's network has the ability to switch from analog to digital at a moments notice! Even Apple couldn't deny them partnership with the release of the IPhone 4.

Still the question rages on, are the Verizon union workers out of their mind? I would say: "YES!" I know it sounds a little harsh but let me lay on you the unemployment statistics, US Bureau of Labor reports "117,000 more unemployed in July, and the unemployment rate was little changed at 9.1 percent".  Millions of Americans are still out of job or under employed and here we have Verizon "union" workers pushing for contract renegotiation. It all seems like a oxymoron if you ask me. As far as I have read: It doesn't appear to be a situation where these union workers are working in "poor conditions" , not receiving fair treatment, nor are they being asked to take a pay cut! I know for a fact Verizon offers great benefits: 401k, employee stock plan, discounted and free mobile & internet services and incremental raises annually.

It is this writer's opinion that Verizon Union workers need to sit down and "eat there cheese sandwich" a colloquialism for "sit down and shut up!" In this day and age having a strike is a luxury one in which America as a whole cannot afford.

Five Ways to Win a Sale Using Your Customer's Mobile

You can safely assume that nearly every person who interacts with your business has a mobile phone, smartphone or tablet computer on them. Mobile devices are always on and always ready for you to suggest mobile interactions that will move people closer to a purchase decision.
The first step in taking advantage of mobile devices is to think about every possible place where your business has a chance to interact with potential customers. For example:
• Viewing an ad
• Browsing the web
• Walking into your store
• Visiting your office
• Meeting you at a networking event
• Talking to a friend

Once you have a list of places where you typically interact with prospects and customers, compare your list with the following five mobile interactions to see which of them can help you to win a sale at the point of interaction or shortly thereafter.

1. Mobile Commerce
If someone is ready to buy at the point of interaction, you can win a sale by suggesting an immediate mobile purchase and payment. You can point people to a mobile website for a web-Some people who encounter your advertising, website or in-store products are ready to buy right away and aren’t necessarily expecting a convenient way to make an immediate purchase. You can offer a speedy customer experience and strike while the iron is hot, so to speak, by pointing people to a mobile website for a fast web-based purchase, or by swiping a customer’s credit card from anywhere using your own mobile device and a mobile payment service such as Intuit's GoPayment solution.

2. Mobile Discounts

Sometimes getting people to make a buying decision is as simple as offering a little extra value in return for acting immediately. Instead of promoting a coupon or discount offer to the masses, you can make your customers feel special by asking them to request an exclusive discount at the point-of-sale via a mobile device. For example, you can use a mobile text-messaging platform to enable mobile text coupons and then ask customers to text the words "your company coupon" to your short phone number (known as a shortcode). When they text-in, the system responds instantly with a coupon or discount offer just for them.

Motorola Interested in Windows Phone OS

Motorola Mobility is open to developing phones that run Windows Phone OS, as Microsoft's mobile platform begins to gain momentum.

Chief executive Sanjay Jha said the Libertyville, Ill.-based company would build handsets that run Windows Phone OS if it could strike a deal with Microsoft similar to the one the software giant made with Nokia.

Jha's comments are a bit of a departure from his February statement that Motorola intended to focus completely on Android. The CEO maintains the company's present focus is still on Android, but it appears he is open to a future where that may change.  More

"Technology is Fashion" by: Taleice J.

Technology is literally the fashion statement of the century! Don’t believe me? Have you ever walked into an “Apple Store” and observed the ambiance? Apple has this cool, futuristic, confidence that makes you feel silly for not buying anything! Apple’s “branding” strategy is un matched as it was reported that Apple net income is more than the entire United States! How is that for a deficit solution? And tell me what do you think of someone who has an IPAD over a regular tablet or someone who has an Iphone 4 versus a regular old Android? I’ll tell you what you think, you think “hey he/she is really cool!”  The type of cellular phone you have, electronic or computing device is now a tool to compliment your “swag”!

I believe it begin in the early 2000’s when two way pagers where beginning to be seen as a status symbol due to their appearance on the “Source” award show! So now that we know technology is indeed a fashion, a sort of accessory to our “swag” arsenal how can we leverage this so that we can make money? I’ll tell you how! Its reported that 50% of the population in the U.S is 30 and under and 90% of that population is on facebook, out of that demographic 90% of them prefer to text.  Mobile phone applications keep us interested in our mobile devices and wanting to use them more and more for every possible thing you can think of!

My company “Ne Media” realizes that mobile phones are an accessory developing into a “necessity”! That is why we stand behind the “Izigg’ brand, it is a tool that allows business’ to connect with customers through text and customers to connect with their favorite business’ through text. The format is pretty simple you’d text: “YOUR KEYWORD” to “90210”, 90210 is a  shortcode that is highly recognizable because of "Beverly Hills" 90210 and boom you’re in the business owner you prefer  mobile database.  Test it out! Text “nemedia” to 90210 and you’ll get an instant message from one of our managing partners.

Sports Illustrated is publishing on almost every type of tablet

While some magazines are publishing on the iPad, or may be still forming tablet strategies, Sports Illustrated has committed to designing separate editions every week for nearly every type of tablet device. Mashable looks at the process:

“Sports Illustrated‘s design team, headed up by creative director Chris Hercik, must format the issue at a 4:3 ratio in both vertical and horizontal formats for the iPad, at a vertical 16:9 ratio for the HP TouchPad, and at a 16:9 ratio (horizontal only) for the Samsung Galaxy and Motorola Xoom. more
